Heights Pediatrics, an independent medical practice, has been serving the Brooklyn Heights community for over 40 years. The vibrant, playful space mirrors the personalities of the doctors while showcasing their eclectic collection of artwork. The 1,300 square feet layout is meticulously designed to efficiently accommodate all program requirements, including a reception area with waiting space, six exam/consultation rooms, doctors' offices, a nurse station, two bathrooms, a kitchenette, a vaccine lab, and necessary support spaces. The space is also designed to function as two separate offices for sick and well visits, a feature that proved highly practical during the pandemic.

 

Upon entering the office, visitors are greeted by the main reception area with a custom-designed waiting bench. The doctors commissioned a local artist to design a site-specific art installation integrated into the bench, with viewing portals at varying heights. These portals reveal a delightful surprise: a kinetic diorama that entertains patients, making their wait more enjoyable.

 

The design strikes a balance between playful and sophisticated, intentionally avoiding a nursery-like feel, as the practice serves patients from infancy through young adulthood. A recurring motif of two interconnected circles—symbolizing the bond between parent and child—can be found throughout the space, from interior windows and bathroom mirrors to custom closet handles. Sculptural arches further enhance the welcoming, child-friendly atmosphere. Each exam room is painted in a distinct, vibrant color for easy identification. The same color are hand painted on the wood chandeliers in the reception area. In contrast, the compact hallways leading to the exam rooms are kept white, providing a gallery like backdrop to display the doctors’ art collection. Many passerby have mistaken the space for a newly opened gallery in the neighborhood!
