HYUNDAI MOTORSTUDIO BEIJING
Amber served as the Associate Design Director and Project Lead on this project by 2x4.
Located in the heart of Beijing’s 798 Art District, Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing is a brand experience center designed not for product display or sales, but as a cultural and artistic experimental hub that reflects the Hyundai brand’s identity and promotes sustainable development of society. Each Motorstudio responds to the urban condition of the city where it is situated; this one in Beijing, the focus is on raising awareness and addressing the city’s notoriously poor air quality.
The project transforms a former factory building into exhibition and social gathering spaces, including a café, library, and vivarium. The air inside the building is purified through both passive and active methods: dense vegetation in the ground-floor vivarium and a visually striking, glass-encased air handling unit on the second floor. The building annotation provides animated data visualization showcasing its clean air and sustainable energy use. Other green technologies incorporated include geothermal heat pumps, solar chimneys, heat recovery systems, and high-performance window systems.
2x4 also curated and designed the inaugural exhibition, “Social Mobility: Envisioning Bodies in Motion.”
Amber oversaw the entire design process, including design development, detailing, and coordination with consultants, the local Architect of Record, and product vendors. Throughout the construction phase, she traveled to Beijing regularly to monitor progress and address challenges common to Adaptive Reuse projects.
